New Senior Care Department Open
The new Senior Care staff is settling in. Their “shingle” is up, their phone lines are in, and their patients are coming.

“That’s great,” you may say, but what exactly is Senior Care? Senior Care is a program for the 65-and-older Medicare population. It will bring to our geographic area a much-needed behavioral health service.

A primary goal of this new department is to contribute to healthier emotional lives of the people who enter the program. Among the services provided is support for patients experiencing depression, grief, anxiety, loneliness, cognitive problems, and other emotional/psychiatric conditions. Referral to the program is by physicians and other health care providers, the Senior Center, churches, and family members. Seniors who need support and who fit the age and Medicare requirements are eligible to participate.

The need for such a program is indicated in part by the high senior percentage of adults living in Paris and the surrounding communities. The 17.8% average in the four communities and their environs contrasts sharply with the 12% average of seniors in the United States as a whole. Statistics also show that disparities between seniors and other adults are magnified by living in rural areas.

Senior Care addresses patients' concerns through individual and group counseling, conversation and memory exercises, and other structured and therapeutic activities designed to enhance mental stimulation, promote physical health, encourage creativity, and decrease isolation.

Patients have access to meals and assistance with transportation.

Senior Care is located in the Verona Mall shopping area near the medical campus. The new PCH/FMC department is staffed by Jane Furry, R.N., B.S.N., Senior Care Manager; Connie Rhoads, M.S.W., Social Worker; Janna Ramsey, C.N.A., Unit Clerk/Transportation Aide; and Archana Chopra, M.D., Psychiatrist.
