For your first orthopedic appointment, the physician or nurse might review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and request imaging tests if necessary. After the diagnosis is made, treatment options will be discussed and a treatment plan is agreed upon between you and the doctor. The orthopedic specialist works closely with your physical therapist when physical therapy is needed. While some conditions may require surgery, the goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible.
